What is tuyactl?

tuyactl is a command-line interface that allows you to directly control your Tuya smart devices (such as lights, plugs, etc.) from your computer without the need for the official Tuya app. It operates by communicating with your devices via local network connections.

How does it work?

The tool connects to your Tuya devices using special access keys (referred to as 'local keys') that you obtain through a setup process. It then sends commands directly to the devices on your local network.

When would I use this?

Use tuyactl when you want to automate your smart devices, integrate them with other systems, or control them without using your phone. It is ideal for home automation scripts and tech enthusiasts who prefer command-line tools.

Key Features

Device Control
Turn devices on/off, adjust brightness, change colors (for compatible devices), and set modes
Local Network Control
Communicates directly with devices on your local network without relying on cloud services
Scriptable
Can be used in scripts and automated workflows since it is command-line based
Advantages
Faster response time than cloud-based controls
Works even if the internet connection is down
More privacy since data stays on your local network
Enables automation through scripts
Limitations
Requires technical setup to obtain device keys
Only works with Tuya devices that support local control
Need to manually update device keys if they change
No official support from Tuya

Getting Started

Install the uv package manager
This is required to run the tuyactl tool. It is a fast Python package installer.
Get your device keys
Use the tinytuya setup wizard to obtain local keys for your devices. This creates a snapshot.json file.
Start the server
Run the background server that tuyactl communicates with.
Start using tuyactl
You can now control your devices. Try listing them first to see what is available.

Example Scenarios

Turning on living room lights at sunset
Use in a scheduled script to automatically turn on lights when it gets dark
Creating a reading light preset
Set your lamp to the perfect brightness and color temperature for reading
