This is a server based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which provides aviation weather information for flight planning. It connects to the aviation weather API to obtain METAR, TAF, PIREPs, and other data.

This Aviation Weather MCP Server connects to the official aviation weather API to fetch various weather data, which can be used as a reference for flight - related information.

• Type - safe API client: Automatically generated from the Swagger definition of the official aviation weather API.
• MCP tools for retrieving weather data:
  • get-metar: Retrieve current meteorological observations.
  • get-taf: Retrieve terminal area forecasts.
  • get-pireps: Retrieve pilot reports near airports.
  • get-route-weather: Retrieve comprehensive weather information for a flight route.

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• Node.js 18 or higher
• npm or yarn
• curl (for fetching Swagger YAML)

Installation Steps

1. Clone this repository:

   git clone https://github.com/yourusername/aviation-weather-mcp-server.git
   cd aviation-weather-mcp-server
   

2. Install dependencies:

   npm install
   

3. Build the server (this step fetches the latest Swagger definition, generates the API client, and compiles TypeScript):

   npm run build
   

4. Start the server:

   npm start

Basic Usage

Get current meteorological observations

npm run get-metar -- --airport=KJFK

Get terminal area forecasts

npm run get-taf -- --airport=KLAX

Get pilot reports

npm run get-pireps -- --region=NE

Get route weather

npm run get-route-weather -- --origin=KJFK --destination=KLAX

📚 Documentation

Integration with Claude for Desktop

To use this server with Claude for Desktop:

1. Edit your Claude for Desktop configuration file:
   • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
   • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
2. Add the following content to the configuration file:

Build Process

1. Fetch the Swagger definition:

   npm run get-swagger-def -- --url= https://api.aviationweather.com/v2
   

2. Generate the API client:

   npm run generate-client -- --input=./swagger.json
